Miriam and I met when I went to teach English in Brazil after university in 1994.
I lived in her house in a town called Franca in Sao Paulo state. I was 21, she was 12.
Her mum became my Brazilian mum. She became my Brazilian sister. Properly, genuinely we are family. The connection stayed. My kids know her as 'Tia Mi' (Aunty Mi).
I didn't own a bike then – I wish I had. I've only really properly owned and used a bike these last few years. Miriam tells me I got her out on a bike on Porty Prom a few years back when she came to visit.
The cycling part of that story wasn't a significant memory for me. I remember her being here and spending the time talking with her but not the cycle itself so much. Yet it seems that bike ride on Porty Prom was important. She went back and made some big changes.
As we planned this project, we realised we were often sending each other cycling shots. The significance of that Porty bike ride came out in our conversation. We settled on bikes and the views bikes give you as our story for this project. Neither of us expected to be cyclists. And yet we are.
My photo is the view from the top campsite at Comrie Croft where I spent a lovely few days with my son and friends this summer.
